Overview

Dr. Timothy Gregory, professor emeritus in the Department of History at Ohio State University, was the director of excavations at the site of Isthmia (GR), and led important excavations and survey projects in various other parts of Greece and Cyprus. Throughout his work and travels, Gregory documented everything on 35mm film slides from ancient artifacts, beautiful scenery, parties, friends, study abroad trips, and so much more.

Having worked at Isthmia with Gregory’s successor, Jon Frey, and having the privilege to meet a number of people from Gregory’s life, I was particularly interested in the people who Gregory chose to photograph during his many study abroad trips to Isthmia.

The designed poster, created in collaboration with designers Evelyn Diamond and McKenna Long, highlights the 100 most photographed people across 8 study abroad trips between the years 1985 and 1997.

The size of each headshot indicates overall frequency, with each colored ring corresponding to what years they appeared, and how often within those years.

The accompanying video was created separate from the poster collaboration and was originally in 1:10 aspect ratio to be exhibited in Michigan State University’s “360 room”, but has since been adjusted for digital sharing purposes.

The poster was exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Isthmia and the Michigan State University Library.
